Larkin St: Helping Youth Stay Off the Street for Good

The Bay Area is booming, but not everyone is benefitting. Today the climb out of homelessness to a place of self-sufficiency is steeper than ever. For homeless and at-risk youth living in the most expensive city in the country, the climb can be particularly challenging.

Addressing the needs of homeless youth is a multifaceted trajectory, and Larkin Street Youth Services knows it. With over 34 years of experience, Larkin Street is one of the most extensive service centers for homeless and at-risk youth in the nation - and one of the most valuable youth resources in the Bay Area.

• 9 out of 10 homeless youth in SF are living on the street.
• 1 in 5 youth have not completed high school at intake.
• Last year Larkin Street served over 2,000 youth from over 40 different U.S. states.
• 3 out of 4 transitional housing participants exit Larkin Street for stable housing.

Larkin Street believes that in order to help young adults transition off the streets, they need to do more than simply provide beds and a full meal. They offer extensive educational and housing support, career readiness programs, and health and learning centers. But more importantly, Larkin Street provides a safe environment for these at-risk youth to address the impacts of trauma in their lives, and access the emotional and physical support they need in order to move forward towards an independent life.
